¡Hola a todos!
I am on a keyboard geared for spanish writing so it´s much easier to do the ¡¿ñÑ€ things. Can anyone remind me what direction the toilet flushes in US? Is it clockwise or counter-clockwise? Technically I am south of the equator right now. So it should flush the opposite direction right?
Anyway, he llegado. Pasaba mucho tiempo soñando de mis experiencias en Ecuador y - ya - aqui estoy. A few hours after getting home my host-mom, Victoria, brought us to her friend Maria Elena´s house, which is in Cumbaya. It is one of the most open vibed places with many windows and sliding glass doors combined with dark wood floors and uncovered wood beams above. She has collected many antiques and they are so artfully placed. From old Singer sowing machines to a radio that can tune in to frequencies across the world (I assume not anymore, but I´m not sure :P) and swords that are hung on the walls. It´s so beautiful.
The most beautiful parts, however, are outside. There are eucalyptus, guava, limon, aguacate (avocado) and mandarin plants all over the yard. I spent the majority of today walking around and enjoy all of these trees. Oh by the way, the neighbors (vecinos) have a dog named Rafi :) You all know how that made me feel. At one point while I was cooking he was walking around outside and jumped up to put his paws on the window sill to look at me with these big eyes and waggin´ tale. Que precioso.. It was a joy to spend last night and today here.
I cooked today with Rosia. As of right now I´m having trouble describing her role in all of this. She works for Victoria, but is probably one of her closest friends. Her son Bryan (bee-dye-un) is 12 and is the most adventurous and inquisitive spirit when it comes to nature. He showed me a lot today about all the plants around the house. He picked, licked, climbed and dissected every tree, fruit and stick we came across.
Tomorrow is orientation in which there will be talks about politics, classes, and safety. I am a little nervous about the whole bus system but Victoria has offered to accompany me on my first trip to and from USFQ so that we are both sure that I know how to go about getting there and staying safe along the way. By the way, I am probably the 17th or 18th person that Victoria has hosted from the US. She seems to know all the ins and outs of how to engage but also give me my time to sit, think and digest :)

Fruits that I tried today:
mandarin (mandarin lol - but they were really small and from a friends yard)
maracuya - passion fruit?
pitahaya/pitacaya/pitajaya - You get the picture. I have no idea how it´s spelled but I have taken pictures of all of these so as soon as I am able to, I will put them up on facebook.
duranzo (nectarine)
Other foods I learned the names for:
berenjena (eggplant)
albahaca (basil)
With love / con cariño,
Maria
PS Everyone is named Maria here too.
